Having lived all his life on the Mornington Peninsula, photographer and digital artist, Yanni, is a visual storyteller. His photographs transcend their subjects bringing the viewer into another realm – the place of imagination. He is a well established career photographer living and working on the Mornington Peninsula south of Melbourne, Australia.
His work is widely recognised, having been published in leading Australian newspapers, magazines, photo books and international novels.
His award-winning photographs have been exhibited in fine art and photographic exhibitions across Australia.
From the moment his father gave him a single lens reflex film camera in the 1980s, Yanni has been making a visual commentary on the life and environment of the Mornington Peninsula and beyond. He has studied photography and art extensively over the course of his career, but maintains that technical knowledge is useless without the ability to create an image that tells a story, evokes an emotional response or conveys an idea.
Published in 2006 Yanni’s first book of photography, Dolphins of Port Phillip chronicles the lives of these wild marine mammals within Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay. It took a decade of patience to capture all the images for the book. This work was undertaken while working as a researcher with the Dolphin Research Institute.
Published in 2020 Beautiful Storm is Yanni’s latest coffee table book. It features his exclusive collection of breath taking thunderstorm photography, illustrating that art can be found in nature’s fury. These mesmerising images bring the viewer into the eye of the storm. Complimenting the images are poems from both emerging and established poets of the Mornington Peninsula and beyond making for a compelling journey into how storms affect the heart and mind.
Since the 1990s his work as a photojournalist and innovative digital artist has kept Yanni’s work in the public consciousness. His photographs are immediately recognizable. From iconic landscapes to breath taking thunderstorms, local wildlife or the people in his community, Yanni’s photographs are synonymous with quality and insight.
His art will continue to inspire, and be a product of creative activity, change and essential continuous development.
